The Beginning

Byblos, in Arabic Jubayl, is a Mediterranean city in the Mount Lebanon Governorate, Lebanon. It is believed to have been occupied first between 8800 and 7000 BC, and according to fragments attributed to the semi-legendary pre-Trojan War Phoenician historian Sanchuniathon, it was built by Cronus as the first city in Phoenicia. Sanchuniathon indicates also that Cronus was originally a Canaanite ruler who founded Byblos and was subsequently deified. When Cronus came to man’s age, using his personal counselor and assistant he opposed his father Ouranus, avenging his mother. Cronus had children Persephone & Athena. When Cronus thus warring against Ouranus, drove him out of his kingdom, and succeeded in the imperial power. After these things, Cronus build a wall round about his house and then roads with water fountains, houses for the people facilitating their lives to gain their trust as king, thus he founded Byblos, the first city in Phoenicia. The period in which Cronus ruled was called the Golden Age, as the people of the time had no need for laws or rules; everyone did the right thing, and immorality was present. It is one of the cities suggested as the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world and the site has been continuously inhabited since 5000 BC.
